41382 Friends Advent Calendar Review

As per usual, with all four of the 2019 Advent Calendars, I’ll be updating this post daily. Each day will have an image of the day’s build, a quick comment, with a final overall review at the end of the month. If you want to keep up to date with the post, use the link to the right of the page – it’ll be there for the duration of December. I won’t be posting any pics on social media, so it won’t get spoilt by me!

Theme: Seasonal; Friends
No: 41382
Release Year: 2019
Cost: AUD $49.95
Pieces: 330 (with three minidolls)

After last year’s excellent inclusion of Christmas Tree ornaments, I was really hopeful we were going to get this again. Alas, the minidolls have started creeping back. There does look to be a few tree ornaments though, thanks to the image of the girls decorating the tree, so it’s not all bad (apologies in advance to the Friends fans!).

Friends Advent Calendar Display Stand

The display stand is very different this year – it’s not a display stand. There’s just a giant advertisement for LEGO Life.

Day 1:

Friends 2019 Day 1

First up is a heart ornament, using the new 3×3 heart plate. It looks good, and the holly in the corner is nice. My two year old daughter had fun putting this one together with her mum, so it was nice and easy! There’s also a gold bar stud attached, so it can be hung, although the string would have to be threaded through.

Day 2: Stereo

Friends Day 2

Today is a little stereo (or sound system). I like it, although I think the speakers could have been black dishes instead of trans light blue. It also appears to be a Christmas tree decoration, given the tile with bar in the middle.

Day 3: Toy Penguins

Friends Day 3

Aww, these are cute! Two wind up toy penguins. They’re simple and could be paired on a Christmas tree, as well as having almost enough spare parts to build another one! Only the 1×1 brick was missing. I’ve also noticed recently but neglected to mention that the doors have been redesigned on all of the boxes – they’re much better this year. No accidental tears!

Day 4: Hamster & Sleigh

It’s another quicker build today, with a hamster on a sleigh. I like the use of ice skates underneath, too. I’m not sure if this is meant to be hung or not, but it’s got the option there.

Day 5: Mia

We’ve got our first minidoll, Mia. Normally Advent Calendar minidolls mean exclusive torsos, but not in 2019, clearly. It is a rare one though, seen in 41363 Mia’s Forest Adventures, albeit with different arms.

Day 6: Cake

Friends Day 6

Feeling hungry? We’ve got a rather fancy cake. It looks great! Nicely decorated, and fun to put together, although I don’t think it’ll hang well.

Day 7: Walkie Talkie

Friends Day 7

Today we’ve got another good looking build, with a larger than minifigure scale walkie talkie! I love this. It’s bright, colourful and instantly recognisable. It can probably be hung on a tree.

Day 8: Snowman

Friends Day 8

Now we’re talking! Something festive! I really like this snowman design. The head’s not quite right, and it’s a shame the blue Technic pins can be seen, but the rest is good. There’s a good amount of parts, and it’s nice and easy to hang, especially with LEGO strings.

Day 9: Lamp Post

Today we’ve got a squat looking lamp post. I don’t know – it looks a little odd. The colours of the pole are Friends colours, but not right in this case, and the thickness of the pole shouldn’t be close to the thickness of the light. The wreath is also a little odd, as there’s no red! It’s a weird one.

Day 10: Christmas Stockings

Friends Day 10

These are nice! A pair of Christmas stockings. They look good, although they’re a little short and long in the feet! If they’d added an extra row of studs underneath the green, it’d look a bit better. These are more ankle stockings.

Day 11: Chocolate Bar

According to Bricklink this is a chocolate bar. I get it, with the pieces and all, but the white threw me. How hard would it be to make that plate reddish brown? This looks like an ice-cream sandwich.I like the wrapping, and the heart is a nice touch, but it’s a little bit of a tough ask to say it’s chocolate.

Day 12: Roller Skate

We’ve hit the halfway mark! Today we’ve got a rather nice looking roller skate. It looks good! The shaping is nice, and it rolls. It’s also able to be hung on the tree.

Day 13: Santa Zobo

Sorry about the delay with this one! Lots of Christmas parties this weekend!

For those of us not accustomed to Friends characters, this is Zobo. Zobo was created by Olivia as a science fair project. He’s been spotted around a fair bit. He’s looking rather festive today with white gloves, red lights, and a Santa hat. He’s also got a lever used as a third wheel or stand – very clever.

Day 14: Train

There’s a lot of stars in this one! I really like this little train – the colours are nice, you can hang it, and there’s some more ice-cream!

Day 15: Holly

We’ve got a little sprig of holly today – it’s very simple, but effective. I don’t mind it.

Day 16: Letter Box

This is a fairly simple build today, with a small letter box, complete with letter to Santa. Not bad.

Day 17: Presents

We’ve got another regular appearance in Advent Calendars – the humble Christmas present. These ones can be opened…

…to reveal a crown and a microphone. It’s an interesting way of building them. There’s also a couple more stars to add to the collection. There’s been a fair few!

Day 18: Nutcracker

This was a surprising one – not so much the nutcracker in general, but the colours! Usually Friends builds have pastel colours, but not this one. It’s good – a pastel coloured nutcracker would have been weird. I like that the arms swivel, but my wife suggested that the ‘face’ was too thin – another yellow 2×2 round plate would have been better. I have to agree.

Day 19: Christmas Tree

Time to put up the tree! It’s a simpler one this year, with yet another star. I like it!

Day 20: Candy Cane

A simple candy cane. Haven’t we seen this before though? Oh yeah, we have. In 2018’s Day 8. This one has a crucial difference though – the end curved piece was red before. Whoa….

Day 21: Gingerbread House

This one is quite nice though – a festive little gingerbread house! It looks great! I like that the hinge points act like little round windows.

Day 22: Sewing Machine

Embarrassingly, this took me a while to figure out, but I got it after I built it – a sewing machine! I think it looks fantastic! Very clever.

Day 23: Chef Zobita

Remember Day 13’s Zobo? This is Zobita, who I think is Zobo’s daughter? Either way, it’s a very similar build to Day 13, except for pink instead of red, a chef’s hat instead of a Santa hat, and a heart tile instead of a star. I think it’s a bit of a cop out, but the hearts (this one and the spare) are nice.

Day 24: Snowflake

It’s the last day – Christmas Eve, and we’ve got a nice little snowflake with some trans blue elements to finish it off. It’s rather pretty. It’s not really exciting, but it’s nice. It’s not very relatable to Australians, especially as half our country is on fire, but it’s a nice inclusion.

All in all, it’s been a bit of a strange calendar. Last year’s ornament based calendar was really good. This year we’ve got a few ornaments, but they’re not as strong, and not as big. There’s been some Christmassy items, but a few other weird ones as well, like the chocolate, the radio, the roller skate and the train.

My favourites have to be the nutcracker, the sewing machine and the stockings. I wonder what next year will bring?

Thanks for following along with me each day. Enjoy your Christmas Day tomorrow – hopefully it brings you some more LEGO!
