70840: Welcome to Apocalypseburg! Official Announcement

After some pretty substantial leaks, we’ve finally got the official details of 70840: Welcome to Apocalypseburg!.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

Available from Wednesday 16th January for VIP Early Access, this monster set weighs in at 3,178 pieces, and will set you back US $299.99 / DE €299.99 / UK £279.99 / AU $499.99. For everyone else, this will be available from February 1st. At that piece count, it means it’s the biggest set produced from both LEGO Movie set themes. Second place goes to 70810 Metalbeard’s Sea Cow from the first movie’s theme in 2014.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

There is a monumental amount of detail, but the big drawcard for me, and a lot of people, is the section of the Statue of Liberty. All that Sand Green!

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

There’s an immense amount of detail in the head especially, and the flame looks perfect. The first time I saw this set, I wondered if anyone was going to attempt to complete the rest of the statue at this scale! Could it be done? Maybe…

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

This is a big set. At over 52cm high, 49cm wide and 33cm deep, it’s a set that will dwarf the modulars. The tallest modular I have to measure against is the Palace Cinema, and that only measures up at around 36cm high. This set is massive! To be honest, I’m looking around my LEGO room now and I’m going to need to get some more shelving!

There’s 12 brand new minifigures, including Emmet, Lucy, an epic looking Batman, Scribble Cop, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern (wow!), “Where are my pants?” Guy, Larry the Barista, Chainsaw Dave (formerly Surfer Dave), Mo-Hawk, Roxxi and Fuse. They’ve all got a very Mad Max vibe, and they look superb. There are some very surprising additions there, but I’m so glad they’re in! Green Lantern and Harley Quinn could be in every set and I wouldn’t care.

There’s look out platforms, a giant ladder, chains, a coffee shop called Coffee Unchained, and so, so much more. All of the compartments at the front can be removed, as they’re built modular-style. I like the slight angle it’s got at the base as well. It makes it a little more special.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

There’s also loads more at the back of the build.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

There’s a truck engine shaped spa, complete with hot tub and shower. I like the soap and bubbles inclusion, and the little yellow rubber ducky (frog)!

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

There is also a police station for Scribble Cop, with a jail cell and kickable chair function (just like the first movie).

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

I’m not sure that sausage in a roll is going to taste all that good. It might hurt!

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

I am so impressed with Batman’s suit. The tyres look excellent, and there’s the little basketball ring made of barbed wire too. There’s so much in this set.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

It’s also good to get a new colour for the welding mask. The welding units been around, but I’ve not managed to pick any up since CMF Series 11’s Welder. The shop looks small, but very cool.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

The stickered elements (I’m not expecting these to be printed) look excellent, with some very clever references to other well known characters.

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

It’s also great to see another gym! The boxing bag uses a similar build style to the Downtown Diner’s gym, although I’m not sure about those spikes – they look painful!

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

I love the little kombi seen to the right of Coffee Unchained. It’s instantly identifiable!

70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg!

I really like this little sign. The end tiles look fantastic. The designers have really put the effort into the little details in this set. With so many small elements though, it will probably take ages to build!
