Well, LEGO CON is over for 2021. Here’s what we got out of it, and some of the things that happened.
I’m interested in seeing how this eventuates. It could be really cool.
We also got three new Star Wars sets, based on The Mandalorian. These will be released in August.
75311 Imperial Armoured Marauder
478 pcs | US $39.99
75312 Boba Fett’s Starship
592 pcs | $49.99
Not sure why this isn’t called Slave I.
75315 Imperial Light Cruiser
1336 pcs | $159.99
No word on any special sets, or UCS sets, or big names. Just these three. It’s a bit of a let down, and I’m not even a collector of Star Wars sets.
It was all a little underwhelming to be honest. I’m glad I didn’t stay up for it, as it would have been a bigger let down had I been sleep deprived!
There were some nice moments showcasing some AFOLs in the preshow entertainment, showing off some pretty great builds, an interview with Mike Massimino, former NASA Astronaut, which was great, and some quick interviews with LEGO employees, but a lot of the rest was honestly a bit missable. That LLAMA guy did a 10 second DJ set which was just weird and forced.
The DOTS mural idea is nice, with people from all over the world submitting patterns on 6×6 white plates using DOTS elements, and the speed build from a couple of the LEGO Harry Potter team was fun but way too short.
They checked out LEGO House, revealed the already revealed life size Lamborghini Sian build, spoke to Steve Guinness about the typewriter (this was good), talked about the already revealed PET plastic brick prototypes which was interesting, and talked to Lydia Winters from Mojang about the LEGO Minecraft sets. The shame here was talking about the sets in front of them but not actually showing them. The nice inclusions were that new aspects of the game are being introduced – Ruined Portals, but Lydia also made a gaff – Caves & Cliffs part 2 isn’t out yet – just Part 1. Part 2 comes out next year.
There’s more, but you get the picture. I was pretty underwhelmed. More exclusive news, reveals, something. Maybe next year? You can check out the recording here. Let me know what you thought.
