Back at the end of September we heard news of The LEGO Group and Top Gear teaming up to release a Top Gear inspired Technic set. Well, now we know what it is. Introducing 42109 App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car.
Unfortunately we don’t have much pricing information at the moment, but when it comes through I’ll be sure to update the article. For now, all we know is that it’s USD $129.99 / UK £124,99. It will be available globally from December 26th, 2019.
It’s also not a specific rally car, which is a bit of a shame – there’s plenty of amazing cars to choose from that would have looked great – but then there would have been another licence to contend with.
As is no surprise with rally cars, this looks to be a very sticker heavy vehicle, as it’s plastered with logos and branding from both Top Gear, the Stig and other random motorsport inspired designs.
It comes with one large motor, one XL motor, and one Bluetooth controlled smart hub, amongst 463 elements.
It’s controlled by the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ app, so can be steered, go forwards and backwards, and has challenges and achievements for budding LEGO rally drivers.
It’s all a little underwhelming. It could have been so much more – an actual vehicle that existed, at the very least! This is small, looks like a standard Technic set with Top Gear stickers on every available surface, that’s remote controlled. I don’t anticipate this one racing off the shelves.
As always, the press release is available below.
